Education & Careers Expo highlights opportunities for jobs, training

Many people in the renewed Hong Kong are looking at their education and career options in order to seize the opportunities that are arising.

As Hong Kong revitalises, people of all ages look to education and career opportunities.

Success beckons at expo

The HKTDC Education & Careers Expo, organised by the Hong Kong Trade Development Council, provides a valuable platform for educational institutions, government departments and private enterprises to communicate directly with the public by disseminating up-to-date information on further studies and career opportunities.

Talents and employers as well as educational institutions and students have a chance to find one another at the annual Education & Careers Expo.

Empowering a brighter future

In the past three years trade friction between Mainland China and the United States and the COVID-19 pandemic have impacted Hong Kong's business environment, with import and export trade weaker.

The HKTDC’s Executive Director tells a Hang Seng University that the city’s bridge role has become critical.

Like many parents of young children, Australian expatriates Jade Poon and Natalie Chow found their Hong Kong homes were becoming cluttered with toys – many of which their toddlers no longer even played with. Friends since their schooldays and keen to live more sustainably, the pair decided this was wasteful. So in April 2019, Ms Poon, a human resources executive, and Ms Chow, a marketing executive-turned-entrepreneur, came up with the idea to establish Happy Baton, Hong Kong’s first toy rental subscription service.

Worries over wasted resources lead two expats to found a toy library for educational playthings.

The post-pandemic workforce is changing as independent contractors and full-time employees demand more flexible hours or remote working. Payroll and compliance provider Deel, which set up operations in Hong Kong earlier this year, is a one-stop platform for global hiring, payroll and compliance, collaborating with partners including co-working space WeWork, cloud-based accounting software firm Xero, and information technology consultants Hofy to localise compliance and payments.

As younger staff transform workplaces, a payroll and compliance provider helps Hong Kong firms recruit top talent from overseas.

Workforce goes global

Many people regard modern universities, with their four-year degree courses followed by mortarboard-clad graduations, as almost as quaint and outdated as the mortarboard itself (it was derived from the headgear mediaeval cathedral builders used to carry mortar up to the towers they were creating).

A Hong Kong organisation is taking the lead on transforming education, moving towards lifelong, digital learning.

Rethinking the way we learn

Organised by the Hong Kong Trade Development Council (HKTDC), the 31st HKTDC Education & Careers Expo ran for four days late last month at the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre (HKCEC). The expo ran in parallel with three other HKTDC events – the Hong Kong Book Fair, Hong Kong Sports and Leisure Expo and World of Snacks.

The HKTDC Education & Careers Expo serves as a platform where people of all ages can embark on a new journey in life.

Forging a brighter future

Hong Kong is forever changing and adapting as China, East Asia and the rest of the world move forward. The city’s people, especially the young, need to continually upgrade their skills and knowledge bases to match.

The HKTDC Education & Careers Expo gives people of all ages a chance to boost their skillsets and knowledge bases.

Fresh skills for a new era

As the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR) turns 25 and celebrates its silver anniversary, the city is arranging a wide range of festivities. These include one of the city’s most enduring cultural events, the HKTDC Hong Kong Book Fair, organised by the Hong Kong Trade Development Council (HKTDC), which will run from 20 to 26 July at the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre (HKCEC).

One of Hong Kong’s leading cultural events, this year’s HKTDC Book Fair is an integral part of the HKSAR’s 25th anniversary celebrations.

Book Fair brings a world of reading

The 31st HKTDC Education and Careers Expo offers people of all ages a chance to find out how to acquire knowledge and skills, as well as put their learning into practice. On the jobs side, the expo features the Careers and Recruitment Square zones as well as the Youth Zone where exhibitors reach out to youngsters with bright ideas, comprehensive information and innovative programmes on internships, overseas work experience and career planning. The COVID-19 pandemic has fast-forwarded technology-driven transformation across the globe and many commentators have said since much technology work can be done anywhere geographically, technology hubs are declining in importance.

Education turns out to be a key factor in the durability of innovation hubs such as Hong Kong.

Technology hubs prove their worth

COVID-19 has transformed family life as the shift to work from home and limits on school attendance mean parents and children spend more time together.
