Bringing a human touch to AI generated video

Hong Kong start-up Firefilm wants to solve the last mile problem in video optimisation.

Listen

Anyone who’s ever struggled to edit a video will sympathise with the daily frustrations faced by professional video editors.

Endless email threads, marked up screenshots, vague feedback and long waits for approval – these tedious back-and-forths can frustrate even the most patient of editors.

But that may soon be a thing of the past due to a breakthrough software developed by Hong Kong start-up Firefilm, one of 10 winners of the Start-up Express programme organised by the Hong Kong Trade Development Council (HKTDC).

The company’s video optimisation software revolutionises the editing process by enabling real-time collaboration across locations.

Through the platform, users can view video footage and discuss improvements instantly through messaging and dialogue boxes, while AI-powered editing functions allow instantaneous adjustments and refinements.

Notably, the software does not need the video source file to produce an edited version.

The result? A dramatic reduction in turnaround time. Clients and editors can now make changes directly and simultaneously, eliminating delays, miscommunication and the never-ending repeated actions that has been plaguing the industry.

From frustration to innovation

According to Co-Founder and CEO Yan Or, the idea for the software came from the founding team’s own experience as full-time film and video editors working with out-dated workflows.

The highly manual process used in many marketing agencies – sending files by email, waiting for feedback, implementing changes and then repeating the cycle – frustrated the team of digital natives used to the quick and seamless photo edit functions, which are standard on any smartphone.

At the same time, they noticed a surge in AI-generated videos flooding the internet.

Often, AI-generated videos can resemble a compilation of precisely edited clips set to music, missing out storytelling elements, such as quirky images and sound effects.

What’s more, even the best AI-generated videos still require human review before use in regulated sectors, such as consumer advertising and public service marketing.

Spotting a gap in the market, Firefilm set out to solve the last mile problem in video production – bridging the divide between automation and human creativity.

And with that, the company was born.

Fast, precise, efficient

One of their enthusiastic early adopters is YouTuber and entertainment industry veteran Soko Izumi. He uses the Firefilm package to make precise editing notes directly on video footage, which technicians can act upon in real-time.

Mr Izumi said the software’s greatest advantage lies in shortening the post-production process. By accelerating delivery of finished content, the system frees up more time for what creators value most – the creative process itself.

Apart from independent producers like Mr Izumi, the company’s target users include production teams, agencies and in-house marketing teams generating content through AI.

Ms Or notes the software’s approval workflow feature is particularly appealing to users in corporate settings.

Launchpad to Asia

After launching its software in 2022, the team quickly gained clients and entered the Hong Kong Science and Technology Park’s (HKSTP) incubation programme.

HKSTP provides office space, mentoring support and funding opportunities and boasts a dynamic community of over 2,300 technology companies.

Firefilm’s immediate priorities include scaling up its marketing efforts, securing distributors and strategic partners to expand market share and registering a patent to protect its core technology.

With sales across Asia in sight, Hong Kong presents an ideal launchpad. As a major production hub for the entertainment and marketing industries, the city offers unparalleled opportunities to showcase products and build brand awareness.

These include exhibiting at globally influential forums such as HKTDC's Hong Kong Electronics Fair (Autumn Edition).

In the face of fears that AI will replace human roles in video production, Ms Or is upbeat about the prospects ahead: “We believe the most productive and effective way to produce videos is to combine both the effort of humans and AI, not replace one with the other.”

Armed with bold ideas and cutting-edge technology, the team is ready to make its mark on the world stage.

Marketers everywhere will be thankful.
