THAILAND: Plans Announced for First Mini Free Trade Agreement
16 July 2021
Thailand is looking to sign a Mini Free Trade Agreement (Mini FTA) with the city of Kofu in Japan’s north-central Yamanashi Prefecture. With a memorandum of understanding (MOU) to that effect now in place, it is hoped that any such deal will boost trade, investment and economic cooperation between the two, particularly with regard to gems and jewellery, items which the city is said to be all but synonymous with.
While the treaty with Kofu is set to be Thailand’s first Mini FTA, it is expected the format will also be rolled out to a number of other cities and regions. At present, the likely prospects are said to include China’s Hainan province, India’s Telangana state and South Korea’s Gyeonggi province.
