The Spaceman Cometh – Bearing Furniture

Having offered compact-living solutions in Singapore, this specialist furnisher hopes to find an enthusiastic market in even more space-conscious Hong Kong.

After operating in Singapore since 2011, space-saving furniture brand Spaceman found it was fielding increasing numbers of enquiries from Hong Kong. Seizing the day, the company opened a flagship showroom on Ap Lei Chau, south of Hong Kong Island, in July 2018.

“We see the trend of micro-living, and also co-living, as exponentially growing the need for multifunction furniture,” said Spaceman CEO Matthew Levin. “But at the same time there is a big gap in the current market. The choice available of multifunction furniture is quite limited. No wonder we have received a lot of enquiries from Hong Kong! We believed our products would come in as a refreshing and better choice.”

The ease of doing business in Hong Kong, coupled with the city’s strategic location, “also attracts me”, he said. “The set-up process only took two weeks and there are at least two good locations especially for buying furniture. We are quite confident as the location guarantees a steady flow of visitors, and this visibility will help us build our brand. That’s why we see an interesting opportunity in Hong Kong and decided to expand here.”

Optimising Space

As home sizes shrink in line with global trends, Hong Kong is witnessing a growth of smaller concepts such as nano apartments and co-living, Mr Levin said. “Even some hotels are converting to co-living space, which can also be perfectly complemented with space-saving furniture.”

“We help our customers make the most out of their living areas by designing furniture solutions that transform living rooms into dining rooms, dining rooms into bedrooms, and bedrooms into study rooms,” he explained.

Spaceman’s point of difference in the market is its sole focus on space-saving furniture, Mr Levin said. “What we have is the best quality, the most advanced – because we know what is possible.”

The brand’s 1,600-square-foot Horizon Plaza showroom carries the full range of original-design hidden wall beds, mattress sofa beds, bunk beds, loft beds, children’s beds, multifunction dining tables, wall-mounted tables and compact kitchen sets. All furniture is Italian-made and customisable for individual requirements.

“With Spaceman multifunction beds, in a matter of seconds your bed can transform into a desk, a storage sofa, even a TV console,” Mr Levin said. “When [you are] not using your dining table, it can turn into a console table, a wall-mounted mirror or picture, or a coffee table.”

Italian Engineering

“With our advanced Italian engineering gas piston mechanism, a piece can go from a less than half a metre as a long coffee console table to a 3.2-metre long dining table, or various sizes in between, which is a pretty extraordinary transformation.”

Spaceman’s consultants work closely with customers to design and build furniture to maximise home space based on a floor plan. Customers can even have a flavour of how their future home will look through 3D visuals, including all dimensions and finishes.

Having received “an enormous amount of interest” from Hong Kong developers, interior designers, hotels and end users for its products over the past few years – even before opening a physical store in the city – Mr Levin said it became clear the community wanted “a better way to plan their space, and have been waiting for someone to bring them the solutions they need.

“So we are confident that by continuing to concentrate on offering high quality and well-designed solutions, there will be plenty more opportunities to grow the range and our store locations in Hong Kong and the region,” he said. “We are passionate about helping as many people as possible to benefit from the joy of space.”
