Peru Bans Canned Fish Imports from Mainland China
22 December 2017
Effective 27 November 2017, Peru has banned the importation of all canned fish products from mainland China after it found nematodes in 20 cans of mackerel in tomato sauce. The ban will remain in place until the relevant mainland Chinese authorities ensure the safety of such products.
According to Peruvian authorities, the cans in question had been certified by the sanitary authorities of mainland China but an inspection by Peruvian officials detected the presence of nematodes in all of the 20 cans examined. The prohibition was issued because this is the second time Peruvian officials find nematodes in a shipment of mainland Chinese canned mackerel. Minister of Production Pedro Olaechea indicated that his ministry will be involved in the development of new standards to improve the current sanitary oversight system for imported hydrobiological products.
