HKGCC - Sustainability Summit - Animal, Health, Environment:Biodiversity Webinar (4 March 2021)
With biodiversity declining faster than it has at any other time in human history, why does it make good business sense more than ever to protect nature?
Biodiversity, by definition, is every plant, animal, insect and microbe that make up the eco-system on planet Earth. Their continued existence ultimately contributes to and supports our well-being by providing a stable climate, resilient supply chains and source for medicine, among other things.
However, biodiversity is declining at an unprecedented and alarming rate. According to the World Economic Forum's Global Risks Report 2020, the current rate of extinction is tens to hundreds of times higher than the average over the past 10 million years. More than 80% of wild mammals and half of plant species in the world have disappeared due to human activities.
As biodiversity is a fundamental building block of our planet's ecosystem, investors and consumers are increasingly looking to companies for actions to reverse the scale of environmental destruction, be it investment in renewable energy, waste reduction or decarbonisation. Businesses are also expected to take into account environmental-related risks in their decision-making process.
At this webinar organised in conjunction with the Institute of International Sustainable Development, our distinguished line up of speakers comprising the following individuals will discuss ways for businesses and individuals to protect biodiversity. They will also share their country's and organisations' approach to sustainability.
