EGYPT: United Nations-backed Green Industrial Parks Project Launched
08 February 2022
Egypt and the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO) have agreed to co-develop environmentally friendly industrial parks in the country. According to the official UNIDO release on 17 January 2022, the project will be financed by the Swiss government and implemented by UNIDO, in line with Egypt’s goal of transitioning towards green industry. The agreement is part of the Programme for Country Partnership (PCP) signed last year between Egypt and UNIDO to realise the ‘Egypt Vision 2030’ sustainable development strategy.
The new initiative will support economic, environmental and social performance in industrial zones and will include technical support for agencies tasked with managing industrial zones, service providers, and small and medium-sized factories; along with overseeing such agencies to ensure global sustainability standards.
The project will focus on reducing waste and greenhouse gas emissions while drawing investments and generating job opportunities in Egypt’s industrial zones. It will also demonstrate the benefits of environmentally friendly industrial parks in raising resource productivity; and how they can enhance the economic, environmental and social performance of businesses in contributing to sustainable industrial development.
