China Releases New Administrative Measures on Import and Export Food Safety

The General Administration of Customs ( GAC ) recently released the revised Administrative Measures on Import and Export Food Safety of the People’s Republic of China (GAC Decree No. 249 ). According to these measures, all imported food must comply with Chinese law and regulations and national standards for food safety, including the requirements of food packaging and food labelling. Imports of food for which there is not yet the national food safety standard shall comply with the requirements of the relevant temporarily applicable standards promulgated by the health administration of the State Council .
The GAC requires all overseas production facilities exporting food to China to be registered, and overseas exporters or agents that export food to China to file with the GAC. The revised measures will come into force on 1 January 2022.
