BRUNEI: New Authority Centralises Food Safety Oversight
08 March 2021
The newly-established Brunei Darussalam Food Authority (BDFA) is responsible for ensuring that food products in the country are safe for consumption and comply with all the relevant consumer protection quality standards. It will also act as a single point of contact for all food-related matters and integrate all current food-related procedures, including those previously under the auspices of the Ministry of Health and the Ministry of Primary Resources and Tourism.
In more specific terms, it will oversee the import, export, production, processing and transportation of food, as well as ensuring that the food supply chain – all the way from initial manufacturing, to distribution and point of sale – operates in a safe and orderly manner. To this end, it will ensure that all food imports or exports comply with the relevant domestic and overseas regulatory requirements.
