China Plans Sci-Tech Innovation Community in Yangtze River Delta Region
01 February 2021
China’s Ministry of Science and Technology recently issued a development plan to build a ‘sci-tech’ innovation community in the Yangtze River Delta (YRD) region (Guo Ke Fa Gui No. 352 [2020]). The plan envisages the establishment of a regional sci-tech innovation planning and policy co-ordination ecosystem by 2035. Every effort will be made to foster technology leaders and innovative venture capital entrepreneurs, and to establish a number of globally influential universities, research institutions and innovation-driven enterprises.
The ministry’s plan includes accelerating the construction of world-class major sci-tech infrastructure clusters around the Zhangjiang Comprehensive National Science Centre in Shanghai and the Hefei Comprehensive National Science Centre in Anhui. Universities, research institutions and enterprises will be encouraged to make joint efforts to achieve breakthroughs in a number of core technologies in key fields and to solve core problems in specific industries.
