Opening-Up Pilot Zone Approved in Xinjiang
24 December 2020
The State Council recently gave the green light to the establishment of a key pilot zone for development and opening up in Tacheng, Xinjiang (Guo Han No. 166 [2020]). Located in the northwestern part of the Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region adjacent to Kazakhstan, the pilot zone will serve as an important window for co-operation with countries in Central Asia and opening up to the west. The State Council pointed out in its reply: The pilot zone will deepen China’s comprehensive co-operation with neighbouring countries, accelerate construction of core regions in the Silk Road Economic Belt, and promote the high-quality development of the Belt and Road Initiative with joint efforts. The zone will also facilitate the development of an important platform for international co-operation in China’s northern region, promote the clustering of production factors, enhance the endogenous power of development and create economic growth poles in the border regions.
