INDIA: Security Concerns Prompt Ban on Further 118 Chinese Apps
15 September 2020
The country has now blocked a further 118 Chinese apps across all relevant digital platforms. The move follows an earlier ban on 59 China‑origin apps in late June, which was subsequently extended to 47 cloned variants of the original target list.
Among the latest tranche of apps to be officially proscribed are Tencent Holding’s PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds (PUBG Mobile); Baidu’s search engine; NetEase’s Marvel Super War; and Taobao, Alibaba’s online marketplace, as well as its Alipay digital payment processing system.
According to the country’s Ministry of Electronics & Information Technology, the move has been prompted by continued data security and privacy concerns.
The list of 118 banned apps can be accessed via the website of the Press Information Bureau.
