NEPAL: Temporary Ban on Imports on 10 Luxury Items
02 June 2022
Following Nepal’s central bank early April 2022 move to prevent commercial banks from opening letters of credit for luxury imports, the country’s Ministry of Industry, Commerce and Supplies has subsequently imposed a total import ban on 10 non-essential product groups until the middle of July 2022. In a noticed published in the government gazette on 27 April 2022, the Ministry banned the import of cars; vans and jeeps; cigarettes and tobacco products, except their raw materials; alcohol; diamonds; large-engine motorcycles; and mobile phones priced at over US$600. Exceptions are made, however, for emergency vehicles such as ambulances. The ban, which runs from 26 April 2022 until the end of this financial year in mid-July, also includes playing cards; toys; TV sets wider than 32 inches; and snacks.
