Mould prevention leader to open innovation centre in Hong Kong

Packaging Service...Green Tech

Micro-Pak protects more than three billion products every year

Listen

Micro-Pak, a global leader in mould prevention, has grown into an international team of more than 100 people in eight countries since first setting up shop as a two-person operation in Hong Kong more than 25 years ago.

Big brands and retailers from around the world rely on Micro-Pak to protect more three billion consumer products every year, including footwear and textiles as well as electronics and food.

The company has a diverse range of products, including some pioneering eco-friendly options. Dri Clay, a biodegradable and plastic-free drying agent that Micro-Pak developed, outperforms traditional and more harmful desiccants that are used to keep moisture at bay, the company says.

Micro-Pak also offers technical services, including factory audits, training and mould testing. Technicians conduct more than 3,500 audits in over 15 countries every year.

Next up is a mould analyser that can detect and identify mould species within 10 minutes without the need for laboratory analysis. This breakthrough device promises to make supply chains more efficient while further reducing the risk of mould-related damage.

Micro-Pak also plans to open a new technical innovation centre in Hong Kong. This will focus on advanced material development for Micro-Pak’s products, underscoring Hong Kong’s status as an innovation and technology hub.

Hong Kong’s position as the most international city within the dynamic Guandong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area (GBA) also provides additional opportunities to optimise supply chain management.

The GBA’s focus on sustainable development creates a fertile ecosystem for growth and innovation, notes Micro-Pak’s Founder, Martin Berman.

The company also has its own thin-film plastic recycling factory in Hubei province in China. This state-of-the-art facility transforms plastic waste into a useful resin that Micro-Pak can incorporate into its own products as well as sell to other manufacturers.

Sustainable packaging is becoming increasingly important for retailers and brands worldwide.

A Green Printing & Packaging Solutions zone at the Hong Kong International Print and Packaging Fair, which was held earlier this week, showcased biodegradable materials and upcycled products as well as innovative green solutions.

Meanwhile, The Fashion Pact – a CEO-led initiative launched in 2019 to eliminate the fashion industry’s harmful environment impacts – now represents one third of the industry by volume, representing some 160 brands from 20 countries.
