Mexico Adopts New Requirements for Cookware

Mexico has adopted new mandatory technical requirements for household cookware with a non-stick coating that is in direct contact with food. The new standards will apply from 7 September.
Specifically, NOM-225-SCFI-2019 sets forth new specifications for the materials used in these products as well as various technical requirements, sampling provisions, test methods, labelling/marking requirements, and conformity assessment provisions. Subject merchandise must be labelled (on the product, packaging or both) with the following information in Spanish: (i) name or generic denomination of the product, when it is not identifiable by the consumer on first glance; (ii) registered brand; (iii) model or producer’s identification; (iv) number of pieces, when that information is not identifiable by the consumer on first glance; (v) name and address of the producer or importer; (vi) country of origin; (vii) nominal capacity in litres or millilitres, as appropriate, or nominal diameter in centimetres or millimetres, as appropriate; and (viii) if a user’s manual or use instructions are provided, a statement referencing such manual or instructions.
