China’s State Council Approves Xiong’an New Area Master Plan
29 January 2019
Plans for the redevelopment of Zhangbei and the Hebei Xiong’an New Area have been given official approval. This will see the two sites repurposed, one as a new, sustainable district of Beijing, while the other will be incorporated into preparations for the upcoming Winter Olympics.
In more specific terms, the State Council has approved the Master Plan for the Hebei Xiong’an New Area 2018-2035, effectively greenlighting development work across three Hebei counties. The plan is to transform the area into two new districts of the capital in an effort to establish a secondary city centre area. At the same time, the Zhangbei area in the north-western Hebei province is to be developed in line with the needs of the 2022 Beijing Winter Olympics and Winter Paralympics. Co-ordination of the overall development of the Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei region has also been made a priority.
In line with the relevant development goals, the Xiong’an New Area will be built with sustainable growth very much in mind, with the ultimate aim of the area being established as an environmentally-friendly and liveable city centre. Its future use as an innovation demonstration zone will also be incorporated into the developmental strategy.
