Vowasia testing the waters in Pearl River Delta
25 September 2012
Vowasia Shunde was set up in Foshan City in 2011 by Vowasia Hong Kong to offer innovative, highly flexible digital video production services. At present it is maintaining only a skeleton staff there. If a project is secured, the company will either outsource the work or ask employees of its Hong Kong headquarters to come in and take charge. Its main target customers are government departments, enterprises and individuals in the Pearl River Delta region.
Vowasia Hong Kong had long contemplated expanding into the Chinese mainland, but because of the complicated procedures involved in setting up a company it didn’t make any move. This time, the Creative Park offered it not only a rent-free period, but also assistance in completing application formalities.
With the help of the Creative Park, Vowasia Shunde has won a number of jobs and its business network is expanding, so it is happy with the speed with which its business is building up. As to the future, it will develop in two directions: one is ad creation and the other is video production related to wedding and other creative business.
Digital production is a creative industry that requires the input of a lot of time before there is any substantial business growth. Currently Vowasia Hong Kong is still focusing on its Hong Kong business and has difficulties allocating more time on the mainland. Another problem is one of human resources—for the time being it has not been able to find the suitable talent to form a mainland team. Moreover, there is a cultural gap between Hong Kong and the mainland and it takes time to fit in.
The mainland is a huge market with widely varying local conditions. So every job has to be carried out meticulously and constant customer contact is necessary to promote mutual understanding. Nevertheless, Hong Kong enjoys clear advantages in this industry. Mainland customers are receptive of the creative works of Hong Kong companies and are giving them practically a free hand.
