CFDA Issues New Rapid Food Testing Guidelines

New guidelines as to the appropriate use of rapid food testing methods have been issued by the China Food and Drug Administration (CFDA). The guidelines – Opinions on Standardising the Administration of the Use of Rapid Food Testing Methods – specify that rapid food testing should primarily be used with regard to edible agricultural products, unpackaged food, food for catering purposes and any food made and sold on-site. It is also suitable for use with regard to the qualitative testing of agricultural chemicals, prohibited / restricted veterinary drugs, prohibited drugs found in feeds and animal drinking water and in any tests for illegally added substances or biological toxins where immediate results are required. In the case of pre-packaged food, this will primarily be subject to standard laboratory testing procedures.
In all instances where rapid testing proves positive, the purveyors / producers of the edible agricultural products in question will then be obliged to suspend the sale of all such products. The relevant food and drug administration body will then follow up on these initial findings through a process of supervision, inspection, sampling and testing.
